Tongue almost drove my grandfather to jail.

Grandpa spent all his free time in the vegetable garden and orchard, forever planting something, digging something up, canning. Children and grandchildren would prefer not to know this, but Grandpa also went to the local big garbage dump to collect cans for canning. The residents of neighboring villages would take all kinds of unnecessary stuff there, and it was not uncommon to find a decent nightstand, dresser, or very good jars there.

So Grandpa went out to get utensils for cucumbers and tomatoes, and started rummaging through the jar part, completely unintentionally noticing a cloudy piece of glass. Initially he thought the jar was just dirty, but when he cleared it with his hands, he realized that the glass was taped over with something that made it difficult to see, and there was clearly something inside the jar. Curiosity was stronger, he looked inside and was almost dumbfounded – there was money inside. Lots of colored bills.

Grandpa forgot about canned goods and everything else, rushing home. He could not keep it all to himself, he was afraid to tell his children – he was sure that they would come and take it away – but he whispered to his neighbor in confidence. She was a good woman, they had lived side by side for many years. The man could not refrain from hiding his find at the sawmill, telling the men that he had found it at the garbage dump. And drunkenly told everyone present in the store.

A couple of days later, a young man was standing on his doorstep proving that the money belonged to him, but his old mother had not noticed what she was throwing away and had mistakenly put out his jar. He asked his grandfather to return it amicably, and when the old man refused, he threatened him with court and jail.

The old man had no connections, and when the summons came, he got very scared and gave the money to the man. It is not known whether he was the rightful owner or whether he decided to make extra money by intimidation, but it is obvious that if the grandfather had not been so talkative with others, no one would have known or remembered about the bank, but then the whole village said that their neighbor was a thief and a swindler, having robbed an honest man from the neighboring village.
