It was really scary to tell my friend that I was dating her ex-boyfriend. I was prepared for a horrible reaction and I got it

They say that you can’t command your heart, and if you like a person, it’s bad for your health to hold back, until you feel a pain in your chest.

So when Monica dumped Frank and he came crying to me, I let my emotions run wild. I didn’t want to be the shoulder he could cry into, I wanted to be the one on whose shoulder he would lie. I confessed my feelings to him, not thinking that it would end in anything good, but maybe at that moment Frank was broken and didn’t care at all who liked him there.

But a few days later he came to see me, and then he started asking me out, bringing me flowers. And we both fell into a magical relationship. Sometimes Frank remembered Monica, which I didn’t really like, but he scolded her more, reminiscing about how bad they’d been together and how good he was with me now.

When Monica called me, I’d console her, and I’d give her the same sympathy when she scolded Frank. But what could I do?

Eventually Monica cooled down and started a new relationship. Frank and I had been dating for more than four months, and everything still seemed great and just as serious. It was only now that I decided it was time to tell my friend about this development. I could not hide the truth from her for the rest of my life, the more so, the lie could be revealed at the most inopportune moment.

For such a delicate conversation I organized our meeting in a cafe. It was a bad idea from start to finish, but I didn’t think things would be less awkward at home.

I prepared myself for the fact that Monica would not be happy to hear about our affair, but the reality surpassed expectations. She just saw Frank and me and she knew. How she yelled! She accused Frank of treason, as if even then she suspected that he had a soft spot for me. Finally, she poured champagne over him from a glass, and I got water. Monica ran out of the cafe, and I didn’t know how to react or what would happen to our friendship.

Frank helped me dry myself, and I helped him. He asked me if I was relieved that Monica had found out, and I nodded yes, almost crying.

Maybe she’s angry for now, because the news hit her, though why be angry, Monica had left the guy herself, but things might get better in time. If our friendship ended, I would have to accept that, too, only it would be easier for me anyway, because I wasn’t lying to her.
