I regret that I listened to my mother and did not terminate my sister’s parental rights

If you think a child is better off with their mother regardless of their lifestyle, then I would encourage you to read my story. This story will show you that in some cases it is better for a child to be orphaned. It wasn’t until later in life that I realized I had made the wrong choice. My sister is two years older than me. We grew up with her in the countryside, our parents always had a subsistence farm, so my sister and I never knew want. My sister always dreamed of city life, and as soon as she had the opportunity, she tried to move there. However, instead of going to school and then going to work, my sister decided to build her life on everything ready. She started going out at the age of fourteen, boys hung around her in droves, only country boys did not interest her. However, city boys went to the countryside to have a good time.

Her sister dated many men, but the boys did not ask her to marry them. When she turned fifteen, she got pregnant by a city boy. She had nowhere to go, so she had to have the baby. While she had a bellyful, she started to be quieter, even started helping out around the house. She didn’t wait for the city, she went to town herself. She wouldn’t come home for weeks, she would show up for a couple of days and then leave again.

My sister wasn’t interested in my son, so I had to take care of the baby. One day my father lost his nerve and whipped her. Then she ran off to the city and didn’t show her face at home for four months. Then we found out that my sister got mixed up with some thief and they were caught stealing.

My sister was not jailed, because the judge took into account the fact that she had a son and it was the first time she had committed such a misdemeanor. After she was released, we found out that she was going to have another baby. After a while her sister gave birth to another son.

After the birth she behaved like a model mother for a whole year, she even went to work. We thought her life had taught her something, but then everything went back to normal. My sister started drinking and became disinterested in the children again, she didn’t come home for a week, and then she disappeared. She did not show up until a couple of years later, not by herself, but with a one-year-old toddler in her arms. My parents hoped that she would come to her senses and come to her senses. But a week and a half later, the little sister disappeared again. After that, my father said his house was closed to her forever.

I went to town to study. My nephews grew up to be wonderful children, they were smart and very obedient. I graduated, returned to the village and got married. I was always very attached to my nephews and treated them as my own children. In all this time my sister did not make herself known. I wanted to take away my sister’s parental rights and get custody of my nephews, but my mother would not let me do that, as she was sure that maybe the children were the reason my sister was still in this world. I had a different opinion on that, but I didn’t cross my mother.

Now my nephews are all grown up and have families of their own. They often bring their children to my husband and me, we have a large and friendly family. I hadn’t heard from my sister in over twenty years, but she turned up recently. Outwardly she looked like an old woman: no teeth, all soaked, could hardly move her legs. The first thing she did was to demand her share of the sale of her parents’ house; she didn’t even ask about her children.

I told my sister that we gave the money to her children. She immediately started calling her eldest son, but he would not talk to her, after which she demanded that we tell her children that they owed it to her to help her, because they only came into this world because of her. She said that if her sons would not help her willingly, she would file for child support, and she threatened me with a lawsuit for not giving her the money from the sale of my father’s house.

Now I blame myself for not depriving my sister of parental rights at the time, but we could not imagine that she was capable of such meanness to her own children. That’s how it turns out that in our case, no mother is better than no mother at all.
