When the This Is Houston Foundation found Jake, the dog was literally dying. He was found lying in a garden, barely lifting his head with great difficulty when spoken to and his eyes completely closed. This Is Houston is a foundation located in Texas, founded in May 2019. This great team focuses on dogs that others would rather put down; whether they are seriously ill or injured, they fight for these animals until there is no more hope left.
And that’s how they did with Jake. They found him lying in a yard because someone notified them online. The owners of the place watched as the dog collapsed in that spot. He didn’t seem to have much hope for life, but they still took him to the nearest veterinary center, which was about an hour away. The foundation’s team was in charge of making sure that the dog was still breathing. It was a very long hour’s drive. When they arrived, they fed him and started his treatment. The dog was in very bad shape, as he almost died twice in the emergency room. However, the foundation did not want to give up and decided not to euthanize him.
His eyes were closed for about a week and when he opened them, everyone was surprised with beautiful light blue eyes. After 7 days, Jake was walking and eating on a strict diet made for his recovery. No matter how much pain Jake was in, he always had a good attitude and a willingness to go out and play. You could tell that this dog was very happy to be alive and after a month of treatment, he looked completely different. They could spend hours playing with him in the yard as he picked up the ball and brought it back to be thrown. The dog didn’t look tired for long. One day came the big moment of his life (another big moment besides the day of his rescue): it was time for him to be adopted by a beautiful family.
This Is Houston published on March 4, 2021 a post on their Instagram where they told the great news that Jake had found a family, made up of Lauren, Shane and his new canine brother, Jasper, another rescued dog. After two weeks in their new home, Jasper and Jake became best friends and siblings. His owners say that Jake’s story touches them deeply and that remembering it makes them think that miracles do exist. They believe this dog enjoys life so much because he almost lost it and knows what it’s like to live without a family and the comforts he has now.
This couple knew that a dog like Jake was really special and that being a part of their life was a gift. So, even though they knew the foundation would receive many requests to adopt him, they didn’t hesitate to insist on being his family. Jake went from being on the brink of death to finding a loving family. He is now a happy dog who loves humans, other animals and of course, playing quite a bit; he even has an Instagram with his brother. All in all, This Is Houston does a great job of not resorting to euthanasia as the easy way out.
