Many elderly people find themselves in this situation. I, too, in my seventy-six years, had to deal with the mercantilism of my own daughter.
I raised two children. Now my oldest son is forty-six years old and my daughter is forty. At first glance all was well, my son worked in another region, his family lived there too. My daughter and I live in the same city. My daughter’s life was not very good: she was married twice, she had work problems, she lives alone now and she brings up her son by herself.
I buried my husband and I live alone, that’s why my daughter used to visit me a lot, we talked a lot, we went shopping together, we celebrated practically all holidays together, she always shared her secrets with me. I always helped her in any way I could: I babysat her son, helped her with money and everything was fine, until recently.
One evening my son called me and happily told me:
– “Mammy, you’re going to be a grandmother again soon, we’re going to have a little girl.
I was very inspired by this news, I even decided to start knitting again to collect a baby’s dowry. I used to knit a lot, but after my joints started to hurt, I had to give up my hobby.
I called my daughter in joy to ask her to go to the market with me to buy yarn. I didn’t like my daughter’s reaction to my request. She reacted rather painfully when I told her I was planning to knit again, but after I told her who I wanted to knit for, she said she was busy and hung up on me.
I attributed this strange behavior to my daughter because she never had a personal life, and with her work she did not get along, so I was not offended at her, she was my child and I truly loved her. However, time has shown that these feelings are not mutual. When I wrote a deed of gift for my granddaughter, my daughter somehow found out about it, and then she came to me with complaints, she began to reproach me for doing everything only for my son, at a time when she is alone and she never saw me as any help.
I tried to tell her that I was leaving her my country house, because she was raising one child, and her brother was about to have his third and he needed help, but she wouldn’t listen to me. We then failed to reach an understanding with our daughter. Since that day, it’s been over four months since my daughter called me, and she doesn’t pick up the phone when I call her. Maybe I’m wrong in some way, but I’m very worried that my daughter was so mercenary, now I understand that she only came to see me because she hoped that she would get the apartment. I have to be honest, as a mother, it really hurts me!
