A little over a month ago, my son got a girlfriend. I do not understand why he needs her? After all, I already clean and cook his food, wake up in the morning to work and collect the bag. He’s only twenty-three, and he’s not even a child.
Ever since he got his girlfriend, his behavior has changed a lot. He was never home, and he started locking himself in his room and disappearing in the evenings. At first I thought he was in some kind of trouble. Maybe he got involved with the wrong company.
I wanted to challenge my son to a frank conversation and started asking him questions, but he started denying me and convincing me that everything was normal.
– Son, you know that after my father died, you’re my only hope. I’m all alone. I don’t even have anyone to talk to at night, but you’ve become a complete stranger lately.
– Mammy, I’m going to go play volleyball with my friends, but I won’t leave you so often and for so long anymore.
I didn’t mind volleyball, but I had a feeling my son was hiding something from me. My neighbor told me that maybe my son had a girlfriend, since he was a very handsome and serious guy. I shrugged my shoulders. Is it possible to think such nonsense on a child, after all, he is only twenty-three. Why would he need a girlfriend when he has me, his own mommy. At his age it is too early to think about it, he still has plenty of time for love.
But my neighbor had thrown a seed of doubt into my soul, and I was beginning to regret trusting her. From that day on, I had my son under surveillance. Under the pretext that I went for a walk I began to keep an eye on my boy: I watched where he went and with whom he was walking.
However, something actually went wrong as he started to be more scrupulous about his appearance. He would leave for practice and wouldn’t be back until ten o’clock at night. And on weekends it was even worse: he would come home well past midnight. To all the questions he answered that he had just stayed too long at a friend’s house.
I questioned him again; I could see that he felt uncomfortable. From that day on I started calling him and telling him that I felt very bad after he left home. I was actually in a lot of pain in my chest at the time. Once, when I called my son again, he told me to stop playing around and that he was a grown man who could get along without his mother.
I did not speak to him for a few days after he said that, I was so offended. My son told me the truth only a year later. He confessed that he had met a girl named Emilie and he wasn’t going to cheat me anymore. Then my son told me that even though he loves me and I am the most important woman to him, he wants to build a relationship with this Emilie and maybe even live with her
I could not listen to any more of this nonsense and asked:
– “Are you really that bad with me? I don’t understand why you need her.
– Mommy, you have to understand that I am an adult and I want to live my own life! – my son answered me.
I didn’t understand what was going on, and my son and I fought. In the evening he came and sat down next to me. I was hoping that he would say that he had left Emily, but he started by saying that he really needed me and that he loved me very much, and then he let me out:
– I remember how much pain my older sister caused you, but I didn’t understand anything then, because of my age, and so I was on your side. But the trouble is that you tend to isolate us from the world. My father never had any friends, and we don’t communicate with anyone in the family. I am a grown man who doesn’t need to be wiped with snot. I’ve become independent and I’m dating a beautiful girl who you hated even before you met her and she has no chance of liking you. Mom, you shouldn’t make me choose between you and her-it’s mean!
– But you would have chosen me anyway! – I screamed.
– It’s unnatural to make me choose! Emily would never do that to me!
– I don’t feel so good! Open the window!
– Mom, stop the comedy! I’ve had enough of this!
He turned and went out. And I was left alone. I didn’t know how to live! Did he really mean what he said?
I knew for sure that Emily was just messing with my boy’s head. I decided I was going to invite her over for dinner and see her in person, because I didn’t want to lose my son the way I had lost my daughter and my husband before.
