We just don’t have enough for a place to live – my sister-in-law thinks my apartment should be sold for the family’s benefit

My husband and I have been married for almost 7 years, before that we also knew each other for a long time. All that time they both worked and managed to save for a private house, we built it ourselves.

Before that time we lived in my husband’s apartment. They renovated it just before the wedding. But despite the fact that so many years had passed, the condition of the apartment is very good.

Accordingly, when we moved into the house, no tenants were out of the question, because we did not want the condition of the apartment to deteriorate. We decided that it was better to just let it stay.

At the same time six months ago I received another apartment within the city from my parents. It did not make sense for us to sell it, we have already incurred the main costs of the house, there was no need.

We decided with my husband that a little later, we will make a small cosmetic repairs and update the furniture. We will prepare everything with the tenants in mind, so that it was not too miserable.

It turned out that up to now, the apartment also just stood there. This is what attracted the attention of my sister-in-law, when we were sitting at a family dinner.

Started talking about how we have two apartments just standing around. One, of course, is needed, but two is absolutely unnecessary. Especially when the family needs to be supported.

The fact is that she and her husband were going to buy a house in a new house. And they were about halfway out. They were in no hurry to get a mortgage because they both had small salaries.

The topic was not going in a very pleasant direction. My husband’s sister explained her vision of the situation. That it was necessary to sell our apartment, to help her and her husband with the proceeds and leave the rest in the bank with an interest. Let me clarify that it was not gratuitous, they were also planning to give us this amount over time (but that is a few years!).

I could see that my husband became uncomfortable. The thing is, we already try to help our family whenever possible, not only physically, but also financially. But this is too serious a request.

So I decided that I myself will answer my sister-in-law. I told her that the question is a serious one. She and her husband will have an apartment, and I will not have an apartment anymore. There will only be a small portion of the remaining funds in the account. With that, there will be no place to live.

You also don’t know when the rest of the money will be paid back. So these kinds of serious financial matters should be handled with the utmost rigor, despite the fact that we are a family.

No wonder that this tone and this kind of talk at the table seemed inappropriate to everyone. My sister-in-law looked at me resentfully, and my husband smoothly changed the subject.
