I don’t want to help my sister – is that bad

It usually happens in families that the younger child is loved more, he is given more love and care, custody. Well, the older one lives for his own reasons. He’s the eldest, he’s an adult. But in my situation it didn’t happen that way for some reason. I’m four years younger than my sister, but my parents always looked after Julia for some reason, while I was considered independent since childhood. I was always in the second role.

Even in the sense that when Julia was getting married they threw a feast for the whole world. They even invited some star to entertain the guests. My parents sold their second apartment to make Julia’s wedding. I didn’t understand their decision, because it’s silly to sell the property for a feast in one day. But I was told that I didn’t understand anything and that Julia’s husband had an apartment – they would live there. Well, that’s how it turned out.

Julia lived with her husband in his apartment, gave birth to his son. But for some reason all this fun and joyful family life did not last long. Four years later Julia was filing for divorce, while I was getting married. At that time I asked my parents to help me at least a little, to make me and my husband a small banquet. We would somehow earn our own money for the apartment. They answered me that poor Julia was left alone with a child, her husband kicked her out of the apartment, they could not care less about me now. I was doing ok. I was very disappointed, but I got used to the fact that I was second-rate for my mom and dad. In the end my husband and I did not do any bunket. We just sat together with my mother-in-law at the table for a while, got married at the registry office, and that was the end of it.

Meanwhile, the parents were swarming around my sister and her baby. Her ex-husband refused to pay alimony and fled abroad. And so almost every night my mother called me, and the topic of her evening conversation was always the nasty ex-son-in-law and poor daughter Julia. In fact, she never asked me how I was, how I was doing, what I was doing. She just didn’t care.

For eleven years my husband and I had been saving up to buy our own place. All that time we lived with his mother. Fortunately, my mother-in-law turned out to be a very kind woman and over all these years we never had a conflict with her. In the end we bought a country house. We decided that it was more profitable, we could grow vegetables and fruits by ourselves and it was great for children. Plus the country house is much bigger than the apartment. We started to live like all other people.

And now my mother calls again. For 11 years nothing has changed in my sister’s life. She doesn’t go to work, sits on her parents’ necks with the baby, waiting for someone else’s handouts. And my mother calls me and demands money from me. She says I just have to help my poor sister. That’s my obligation. And I don’t want to help her in any way. I have achieved everything in my life on my own, without anyone’s help, and my husband and I worked very hard on our housing. Who blames Julia for being so careless and lazy?
