When I told my friend that I was preparing a surprise for him on my husband’s birthday, she told me that men don’t like that kind of thing. Besides, all of his part-time friends were his co-workers.
Victoria works with my husband in the same department. They have known him for many years. And her whole family knows him very well. We didn’t get married that long ago, so I haven’t had time to get to know him very well. I’m not quite sure who can be at the party, so I went to my friend for help:
– Come on, it’s just the way they always look, but in fact, everyone likes a pleasant surprise.
– Well, it’s up to you, and I’m just warning you.
I did a search for restaurants that bring food to order. A couple of friends were in charge of setting the table and greeting the rest of the attendees. When Richard and I got home, he would be surprised and we would congratulate him.
I organized everything very carefully. But after we entered the house and everyone began to congratulate my husband, he was very surprised, but at the same time he was not happy. Rather, he looked unhappy. A few minutes passed, he got used to what was going on and we continued to congratulate him.
All the guests gave gifts and each said one. There was a surprise from each. One told a poem, another suggested a contest. I also saved something.
I put on some music, sang and danced while doing it. My rehearsals were long. My friends also took part in the dance. Everyone was excited and I could see the smile on Richard’s face.
In the evening, when everyone went home, he immediately changed. I was cleaning, and he sat in his chair and looked grimmer than a cloud.
– Honey, what happened? Are you unhappy?
– What you did today was very thoughtless and stupid. Now everyone will talk about your behavior and think it was a debauchery. – After these words he left.
I couldn’t understand his reaction. And the resentment was very strong. What is he talking about? The song is quite decent, and so is the dance. What was wrong with it?
The next day everything became clear to me. Since I worked with him at the same firm, when I got there I noticed that people were quiet as I approached. They were clearly engaged in a discussion about last night.
Afterward I noticed that one of the men was copying my dance from last night. But when I approached, everyone abruptly changed the subject.
I walked over to Victoria and said:
– Everyone’s probably on everyone’s lips about last night’s party?
– Of course they are. How was Richard? What did he tell you? Is he happy?
– No, but I don’t understand his reaction.
– You know, everything at work is very elaborate in terms of hierarchy. He’s in an important position. He’s a pretty well-respected person. And when parties like this happen, no one feels boundaries anymore. After yesterday no one is afraid of him, everyone discusses him and picks at him. There are as many reasons as you can find for that.
As it turned out, my husband was right. Maybe I acted rashly, if I did not listen to his girlfriend and acted in my own way. And she had warned me.
