– We took you in as our own daughter. And you’re… A hell of a thing!
When you hear a phrase like that, you immediately see a kindly married couple who picked up a jaded and dirty orphan. And you grow up to be an ungrateful brute. But it’s not that simple.
There’s a popular belief that if your child has tied his or her fate to someone, that someone owes you everything.
– Mama told you to come to the cottage. I have to pick potatoes and deal with the cesspool,” said the girl to her husband.
More often than not, the young son-in-law puts off everything and runs to help the poor mother-in-law. Especially since she is not asking, but demanding. If he begins to resist – hostile relations with him are assured.
– I want to go to the dacha, but I want to relax there and grill shashliks. I have enough physical work, – said my friend to his wife.
– Mom is trying for us, and you refuse to help her,” my wife replied.
– I can buy everything, why bother? She’s planting potatoes on an industrial scale.
– She’s doing the right thing. And you are ungrateful!
Similar slavery is found in the world of daughters-in-law. This poor girl has to obey everything without question, so as not to face accusations.
A very strange story happened to my neighbor. She got together with another man after her first marriage, but his parents strongly disapproved of their son’s choice. However, when they got sick, they immediately remembered what a useful beast the daughter-in-law was.
She helped, never said no. But then she was confronted with the fact and forced to quit her job. She tried to calmly explain that such a thing was not in her plans. That’s how she became an ungrateful brute.
A daughter-in-law and son-in-law are not potential servants. A relative of mine, when she married, was given a bedridden father-in-law as a dowry. She was told right away that it was her duty to take care of him. She hauled boats, washed, fed, and her husband left her, getting involved with a young secretary. She, of course, was not going to clean up after anyone.
When we decide to marry, we should not think about serving the wife/husband’s parents. There may be requests, but no one has the right to demand. No one owes anyone anything.
