– Mom, don’t worry, I’ll never leave you! – Brian told his mother.

He was supposed to be drafted into the army, but he was. Shortly before that his mother became very ill. His two older brothers were already living in the city, and it so happened that he, the youngest, Brian had to take care of his mother. He did not complain about his fate. He really liked living in the countryside. And then suddenly two nurses were sent to their village for practice. One of them, Emma, fell in love with him.

Before that he had only managed to finish school. He studied well, but did not try very hard, often being lazy. His mother wanted him to go to school somewhere after school. But he didn’t want to, he said he would just go to work at the collective farm.

-But people keep learning! They choose to become tractor drivers, combine operators, machine operators! – the mother tried to get through to her son.

And Brian did not want to study at all. He was just an errand boy for the brigadier.

When Brian saw the two nurses, he immediately liked one of them, Emma. He fell in love with her at first sight. He walked up and immediately got to know her. Emma liked him a lot with his boldness, and they began dating. They often went for walks together. They went to the forest, walked along the wheat fields. Emma liked Brian a lot, too.

They weren’t hiding from anyone. What a good time it was! Brian felt like the happiest man in the world.

And then Emma’s internship ended. She said:

– I’ll never forget you! You’re such a good person! Your soul is wonderful! You are strong. I love you, but I can’t live in the countryside. Come to my city, and I will gladly marry you!

Brian was very hurt that Emma was leaving. But she left anyway.

At first he couldn’t get used to it at all, couldn’t settle down. But then things got better little by little, but he still constantly thought of Emma and thought of her. In the autumn there were very few people in the village. The interns left, the students who helped the collective farm left, all the lovers of berries, fresh vegetables and fruits left. Brian’s peers were taken into the army. And he was sad, and he often took walks around the village. He walked to the places where he had once walked with Emma and remembered her.

When he came back, he would tell his mother:
– “Don’t you worry! I’ll never leave you!

He went for walks in all kinds of weather. He would dress up warm and walk for hours. He missed his beloved Emma so much. She often wrote him letters, calling him to her. He knew she was homesick, too. Brian began to smoke a lot.

– Where do you wander in the dark? And why do you smoke so much? – his mother scolded him.

And he just smiled back. Then one day his mother hugged him and said:

– “Son, you’ll get lost here! Take me to your older brother. I’m going to live with him. And you go to your Emma. Marry her. I want you to be happy.

Brian said nothing. A few days later, the foreman offered him a job at the stables. Brian accepted.

The collective farm had a small stable, with only ten horses there. The previous groom had simply left for town. His stable was a terrible mess. He didn’t like horses and he didn’t like to work. Brian, on the other hand, really enjoyed working in the stable. He took great pleasure in taking care of the horses. He even made signs with the names of the horses.

Now the stable was tidy and very clean everywhere. The horses were always fed. The foreman was very pleased with Bryan’s work. And yet one day the mother spoke to her son again about the fact that he had to go to town.

– I’m not taking you to your brother. His wife is so mean! You won’t be happy there!

And then I got a letter from Emma. She said there was a guy asking her to marry him. She had known him for a long time. “But I haven’t answered him. I’m waiting for your answer. I want to marry you. Come to my city! I feel so bad without you!” Brian thought about it and agreed.

Only he didn’t go to town alone. Of course, he took his mother with him. He had married his beloved Emma, and they were living very well. His mother enjoys babysitting her grandchildren and is very happy with her life.
