I was always convinced that he was an arrogant golden child. Kevin had everything you could ever dream of: a private apartment, a foreign-made car, brand-name clothes.
I was always the gray mouse. I hid the fact that my parents were alcoholics and that I had been working since I was fourteen years old. During that time I learned how to sew, so I sewed and repaired the clothes of people I knew. On the hardest days I went to wash the entryway, shyly hiding from my acquaintances.
At the very beginning of the school year my classmates decided to throw a party. I was most surprised that I was also invited to the party. I wanted so much to show everyone that I meant something.
I had no money to buy a dress, so I sewed it myself. My neighbor did my hair and all I had was lipstick. When I came to the party, my classmates didn’t recognize me. Kevin noticed me and watched me intently the whole night. I wanted to sneak away, but he caught up with me and offered me a ride.
I told him the address of the house, which was next to ours, I was ashamed to show him where I lived. From that night on we started talking to Kevin and gradually fell in love with each other. He no longer seemed arrogant to me, as he always treated me as if we were on the same rung of the social ladder.
Everything was fine until my classmates found out about where I worked and started making fun of me. I wanted to fall asleep with shame. After all, a beggar, whose parents are alcoholics is not wanted! I had no choice but to run away, so I went to the dean’s office and wrote an application for a gap year.
I decided that after a year they would forget about me and maybe I would even be able to transfer to another department. I now know that it was a completely stupid thing to do, but at the time I thought that was the only way out. I changed my number, which put an end to my relationship with Kevin, but two months later I found out that I was pregnant.
I had no one to share the news with. I worked all day long, and at night I sobbed into my pillow. My parents had drunk themselves to death by then and were always demanding that I give them money. My godmother saw this and decided to take me in.
After I told her my story, I felt a little better. She was the one who accompanied me to the maternity ward and she was the first one I told that my son was born. My baby boy was blond and blue-eyed like a little angel. I looked at him and couldn’t get enough of him.
I suddenly got a text from Kevin saying that he loved us very much and wanted to be with us. The next day I was discharged from the hospital and I was very afraid to look into the eyes of my beloved. I can still remember standing in front of the door hugging my son and being afraid to face my beloved.
How stupid I was then, since I had cut almost a year of happiness out of my life. How could I have been smart enough to give up my beloved forever? However, I could only understand it when I saw the love and tenderness with which Kevin looked at our son and how tenderly he took him in his arms.
