– As a rule, when unfamiliar numbers call, I don’t pick up the phone,- Maria says. – And this time for some reason picked up. Maybe because I was waiting for a call friend, I thought it was her, so I picked up. And a stranger there, saying hello. I need to meet with you to discuss some issues concerning our children.
Maria is the mother of a grown son. The boy is thirty and has been living together with his girlfriend for a long time. The guys started living together a little over six years ago. Young people work and rent an apartment. Maria is acquainted with her son’s girlfriend, but does not maintain a close relationship with her.
At first she tried to make friends with her: she invited the young people to her place and made treats. Over time, however, she realized that the girl had no use for it, so she stopped doing it. Young people live their lives, they have their work, meet their friends, travel, and Maria has her own life, which is no less full than that of her son and his girlfriend. Mother and son do not call more than once a month.
– I did not immediately understand what children we are talking about. – Maria shares. – I told the woman that she gave me the wrong number. And she said to me that no mistake, because Adam – that’s your son. Only after these words I realized that it was her son’s girlfriend, and most likely the mother is calling.
Maria immediately asked what kind of questions the stranger wanted to discuss with her.
– Don’t you see what the situation is,” she said, “Emily is expecting a baby! I think something has to be done in this situation. Do you know if your son is going to legalize his relationship with my daughter?
But Maria knew nothing of the fact that her son’s fiancée was pregnant. She knew nothing about it, just as she knew nothing about her son’s plans. She and her son had talked about it about a year ago. Adam had made it clear to his mother at the time that he had no intention of getting married.
– I am against getting my passport smeared with stamps! – he told his mother. – Until the age of forty and do not wait.
– And if your fiancee gets pregnant, what will you do? – asked my son’s mother.
– We are not small and know how to protect ourselves! – answered the son. – Having a child is not part of our plans at the moment. First we need to solve the housing problem.
– Does Emily know about your thoughts? – Mother asked Adam a question.
– Of course she does! – my son smiled.
Now it turns out that Emily is pregnant. According to Emily’s mother, her daughter is all worn out, she cried around the clock, because Adam still refused to propose to her.
Her mother asked to talk to Adam, because they practically have a child and urgently need to decide something, and that’s why they should put their heads together and create a family, if not for love, then at least for the sake of the future child.
And Adam and Emily look great together. They live well together, there are no quarrels, no scandals, no showdown between them.
– What does Adam think about it?
– He hasn’t told me anything in principle! – answered the mother. – I did not even talk to him about it.
– So my son does not know that you called his future mother-in-law?
– First of all, this woman is no one to my son. And secondly, – I really did not say anything to my son. That’s what I said, that it’s none of our business. The young people decide for themselves what they should do.
– And what did she say to you?
– I don’t think that’s the reaction she was hoping for. I think she hoped that I’d start scolding my son and insisting that he marry Emily.
If you look at this situation from the perspective of Emily and her mother, it seems that Maria raised a completely irresponsible son. After all, it is his mother’s fault for not raising him to be responsible, and so he hides from any difficulties.
If Maria was a normal mother, she would have voiced her son’s attitude to this situation, because we are talking about her grandson, too? And maybe Maria is right that this is none of her business. And what do you think?
