My husband grew up and was raised in a large family. My mother-in-law had children until she had a daughter. A strange tactic, but not for me to judge.
When I got married, I thought I was lucky. David seemed responsible, courageous, strong. He knew what a family was, but there was no way he could disconnect from his mother and little sister. If mother-in-law did not particularly care about her sons, her daughter’s well-being was always in the first place.
Lissa was 10 years old when we met. At first she didn’t bother me, but about 5 years later it started. She didn’t want to study, she got mixed up with some bad companies, but my husband had to take care of everything. My sister-in-law could call him in the middle of the night for help.
I hoped that Lissa would grow up and get married and everything would work out. But it wasn’t! When she found a bridegroom, her mother-in-law told her brothers to contribute to the celebration, because she had no money. The son-in-law was some kind of starving bridegroom, so the newlyweds had to live with their mother-in-law.
One child, the other… The in-laws realized that they didn’t get along on the same turf. And then my mother-in-law came up with the perfect solution – she would move in with us and give her apartment to her daughter. But is it okay that I bought the property with my own money, my husband did not give even a penny? The interesting thing is that he is also happy with such a situation, he says my mom will help you.
We have a two-bedroom apartment. But I do not want to sacrifice my comfort and share living space with someone else. My mother-in-law is sure that we are obligated to accommodate her, since my husband is the eldest son who should take care of his parents’ well-being.
I love my husband, divorce is not a consideration. But how do I talk some sense into him? How do I explain that living with his mom is hell? Maybe you can give me some advice?
