My relationship with my mom isn’t great. For as long as I can remember, she’s always loved my sister Linda more. Linda herself was well aware of that, and often snapped at me about it. But how could she? After all, she is the favorite daughter, and I am not.
Then I got married and soon Linda did, too. Only Linda had an earlier son than I did. My goodness, Mom was running around Linda’s son like a bird, this way and that way. And sit with Adam, and buy him everything. Anyway, Adam became the center of the universe, just like Linda and her husband.
Then three years later I had David. My mother congratulated me dryly on my husband and that was the end of it. As many times as I asked her to babysit, her answer was always the same – either she had work, or Linda asked her.
Of particular note was the way she gave gifts to David. She was always buying something that was completely inappropriate for his age, but perfectly appropriate for Adam. And then, with a satisfied smile, she would reply that she was so wrong. But it’s okay, Adam will use it and then give it to David. Of course, after a couple of years those gifts were in such condition that they belonged only in the trash. And what kind of gifts are those, which as a gift is like a shabby thing?
Anyway, that’s how unpleasant our relationship is.
And now it’s time for my mom’s anniversary. It didn’t matter that I wasn’t much of a daughter and neither was my family. I was immediately presented with a list of things Mom wanted from us. It’s worth noting that the list consisted of expensive things that we can’t even afford ourselves.
What is interesting, my sister Linda has already bought my mother expensive dishes, but at a discount, that is, it cost her pennies. From me mom demanded an expensive fridge or TV, or gold of a certain weight.
Do you think I bought her such a gift? Of course not. I’m not vindictive, but I think that people need to respond in the same way. Namely, since she’s giving us unworn things, I bought her just underwear. No, not worn, but just inexpensive underwear.
I’m sure there will be a mad scandal and words about me being an ungrateful daughter. As unloved as I am, the title of ungrateful will not affect me in any way.
