Spouse doesn’t want to give his daughter’s apartment

My spouse’s aunt left him an apartment as an inheritance. The apartment is small, but it is actually in the center of our town. My husband and I have had three children during our married life. Our oldest daughter is now nineteen and in college. Our oldest son is now twelve and our youngest is five. We live in a spacious three-bedroom apartment, so we have plenty of room for everyone.

My husband and I had a big fight about his apartment. I suggested to him that our daughter should live in it, because she is a big girl and may soon get married. However, my spouse is sure that it is completely unfair to our sons, he suggests that we sell it and divide the money equally among the children. But I’m sure that’s a very silly idea, because the children won’t be able to buy anything with the money.

Even if we do what my husband wants, the money will just lie in their accounts until my sons come of age, and my eldest daughter will be able to use it to buy an inexpensive car. I am sure that better a bird in the hand than a crane in the sky, and so at least let us provide housing for one child, and while the boys will grow up, and maybe them, we can somehow solve the issue with personal square meters.

My spouse is sure that if we give our daughter this apartment, it will put a strain on her relationship with her brothers, and they will never live in peace because of her, and I think our children will be fine, since the boys do not yet fully understand the whole situation, and so we will have time to think about their future as well.

We have not said anything about our thoughts to our daughter yet, because we first decided that we will think it over ourselves, because my aunt’s apartment needs a serious repair, and in the condition it is in, it is completely uninhabitable, and we do not have the money to put it in order at the moment.

I’m wondering, looking at this situation from the outside, which one of us is right – me or my spouse? Should I continue to insist or is it more reasonable to take my husband’s side, or maybe readers will see a third option, which my husband and I do not see?
