Mother-in-law wanted to divide my apartment

My beloved and I got married six years ago. After our son was born, my spouse and I decided to sell my one bedroom and then take out a mortgage and buy a two bedroom. We thought that soon our baby would need his own room, and we need a place where we and my beloved can be alone.

We looked at the apartment, and when buying it registered it in my name, so I was nominally its only owner, but since we bought it during marriage, in case of divorce, this living space will be divided between me and my spouse in equal shares. Of course, it was possible to allocate my share of the down payment, which we made by getting money from the sale of my pre-marital apartment, and then divide it.

When we bought our own place, we couldn’t even imagine that divorce would ever be an issue. But then, something went wrong. Maybe we just got tired of each other, or maybe we just got caught up in life?

I so think my husband shared his worries with his mommy. I’m sure he did it out of good faith, maybe he needed a woman’s wise counsel, but it turned out to be exactly the opposite.

Recently my mother-in-law called and said she was coming over for dinner. I was alarmed by her visit, since we usually visit her ourselves. My spouse’s parent visits us very rarely, arguing that it is not convenient for her to get to us. I thought that it is unlikely that she missed her grandson or son. I decided that it was necessary to prepare a festive dinner.

That day Margarita Vsevolodovna came to us when her husband had not yet had time to come home from work. I was in the kitchen at the time, laying the table. My mother-in-law did not talk to her grandson, but came right in and then shut the door behind her.

– Nel, I want to talk to you seriously. I recently found out that you and Yury had some problems in your relationship and I decided that if it came to a divorce, you would take my son to pieces.

I was almost speechless after that statement. I immediately asked my mother-in-law:

– What made you think we were getting a divorce? And also why do you care how my husband and I are going to divide our jointly acquired property? Jury and I discussed many years ago what we would do in a divorce.
– I am not at all happy with this state of affairs. I am well aware of how wives are ripping off their husbands these days. Wives do a lot these days just to keep their apartment. That’s why I insist that you divide it now, before there’s any serious conflict. I think you should sign over half of your apartment to my son, so he won’t be left on the street in case of trouble.

I was blown away by the nerve of that woman.

– I take it you don’t take into account the fact that half of our apartment was bought with the proceeds from the sale of my pre-marital one-bedroom? And besides that, I was the one who paid the mortgage after I got out of maternity leave?
– All of the property that spouses bought while married must be divided in half during the divorce.
– Have you and your son talked about this yet?
– I’m not even going to do that, because men have no business getting into such things. I can, and I will decide the matter myself.
– Listen to me! I’m not going to discuss this subject with you. Yura and I can figure out what to do and how to do it without your help. I am very grateful and appreciative of your “good opinion” of me. I simply refuse to discuss this topic with you any further. Of course you can wait until your son gets home from work, but I’m going for a walk until you leave.

I went to get dressed, but three minutes later I heard the door slam. My husband came home from work half an hour after my mother-in-law left, and he was very surprised that his mother hadn’t waited for him. I tried to convey the whole conversation with his parent as calmly as possible. When his emotions had subsided he said he knew nothing about his mother’s plans and that he had not discussed any such topics with her.

My husband said he would talk seriously with his mother so that she would not bring up such topics again. After my mother-in-law came, I could not calm down for a long time, maybe I said something unnecessary because of excitement, but on the other hand I think it is better to put the man in his place, even though he is your relative.
