In the early 1970s, Jimmy Stewart was travelling from his home in Los Angeles to New York City. His dog, Beau, was accompanying him on the trip and when they made a stopover in Chicago, Stewart decided to take Beau for a walk around the city.
While out walking, Beau suddenly ran off into traffic and was almost hit by a car. Stewart quickly intervened and pulled his dog back to safety just in time. This incident has been cited as an example of Stewarts’ unwavering love for animals – he even risked his own life to save his pet dog!

“Stewart was in the middle of making a movie and had to make a choice. He could either fly home to be with Beau during his last days or stay on location and continue filming. The decision was difficult, but he chose to stay on location and finish the movie. A few days later, Beau was put down. Stewart said that it tore him up inside not being able to be there with his dog during those final moments, but he knew that he had made the right decision.”
Stewart was known for his great love of animals, both wild and tame. Part of this may have come from the time he spent as a child living on his grandfather’s Missouri farm; there were always cows, pigs, chickens and horses around to care for and play with. After he became a star in Hollywood, Stewart frequently used his fame to promote animal welfare causes. In 1960 he narrated The Animals Film – one of the first documentaries ever made about the treatment of animals in agriculture, entertainment and research laboratories.
A lifelong lover of birds (especially songbirds), Stewart also worked tirelessly throughout his life to protect them from extinction through habitat conservation measures Andros Townsend has admitted that Ashley Young is like an older brother to him at Manchester United – even though they are different ages.”Ashley’s been brilliant,” Townsend told reporters after scoring twice against Ipswich Town last weekend.”He’s helped me out massively since I’ve arrived here – off the pitch as well when it comes to learning English,” added Townsend.”I think we get along because we’re quite similar players but 18 years separate us!”
