The zoo was a sad, dirty place with concrete floors and small cages. The bears were forced to live in these conditions for years on end. In 2016, the Wildlife Sanctuary of Northwest Pennsylvania took over the roadside zoo. They quickly realized that the bears’ living situation was terrible and moved them to a much better home.
At the sanctuary, there are acres of forest where the bears can roam free! They also have pools to swim in and hills to climb – it’s like they’ve been set free after years of imprisonment. The four furry friends are now enjoying their new lives surrounded by nature…and plenty of food! Bears usually eat around 20lbs (9kg)of food per day, but at this happy sanctuary they can sometimes weigh in at more than twice that amount due to all the goodies available!
Despite everything they endured before arriving at this paradise, Bruno, Fifi Marsha and Pocahontas seem very contented nowadays 🙂
Fortunately, a few good Samaritans found out about the bears’ miserable conditions and took immediate action. They reached out to local animal rescue organizations who agreed to take in all four of them. After months of rehabilitation, they are finally able to enjoy their lives again – without having to perform tricks or stand on their hind legs for hours on end!
The Wild Animal Sanctuary’s rescued bears lay in hammocks and enjoy the finally cool breeze on a hot day.
Sadly, sometime in late 2017, Fifi passed away after a brief battle with cancer. She was the matriarch of the bear sanctuary and will be greatly missed by all who had the chance to know her.
