It turns out that there is some truth to this – babies do have their own communication style, and it’s actually measurable. A study recently published in the journal Science found that by 6 months of age, infants are already able to communicate with each other through subtle gestures and expressions.
To come to this conclusion, researchers observed interactions between pairs of 5-month-old twins (who were still developing language skills). They looked at the babies’ eye contact patterns, facial expressions, and gestures as they interacted with one another. What they found was that even early on in life, infants were using these methods of communication to share information with each other. For instance, when two babies made eye contact while exchanging a smile or laugh, it was interpreted as an act of social cooperation. Conversely, when a baby displayed a negative emotion like sadness or anger, the other baby would typically respond by looking away.
Maybe the girl is just saying goodbye to her new friend, but whatever she’s saying, the goat sure looks like it’s responding in kind. From their expressions, we can tell that they seem unbelievably happy with one another! This adorable interaction is proof positive that goats are some of the most intelligent animals on earth – who knew?
